Back Up and Punt

Updated: May 17

"Back up and punt" is a phrase that originates from football, where punting is a strategic move when advancing seems unlikely. But outside of the game, it’s also used to mean reassessing and adjusting—stepping back, reevaluating a situation, and choosing a different approach when the original plan isn’t working.

It’s about making the best possible move given the circumstances. Whether in business, personal life, or problem-solving, sometimes suggests it’s time to pivot, regroup, and try again with fresh perspective. That is what happened to encourage me to take another look at how the organizations is performing. Of course, I would use the analogy of football versus baking a cake but stick with me a moment. Being a former coaches' wife came through again. It happens a lot.

The PIVOT framework (below) keeps me focused, reminding me that transformation is intentional. My temporary pause to rest is simply my recalibration--a backup and punt situation.

P – Pause: Take a moment to assess the situation before making a move.

I – Identify: Recognize what needs to change and what new direction to take.

V – Visualize: Create a clear plan for the next step forward.

O – Own: Take control of the transition and commit to the shift.

T – Transform: Implement the change and grow through the process.

This organization didn't want to miss an opportunity to share with you this month. I remind myself that we are not letting anyone down by taking another look at what and how we will move forward. Keeping in mind, forward is the direction we are going.

To Your Health, Cynthia
