There are meals, and then there are experiences. I recently had the privilege of attending a fine dining event featuring the talents of renowned Chef Scottie A. Johnson—and I’m still savoring the memory.
From the moment I stepped into the host location, it was a perfect canvas for what would become an opportunity to enjoy a combination of flavor, texture, and storytelling. The menu was extraordinary with dishes that introduced me to obviously something new like chapters of a good book that makes you peek over to the next page for what would unfold with grace and precision. But what made the evening even more pleasant beyond the plate was the company. A group of mostly strangers who quickly became companions in this discovery. We bonded over bites, shared reactions. The craftsmanship and effort were evident. The chef showed off his artistry before our eyes.
Chef Johnson didn’t just serve food he offered an education. This 4-course meal was a lesson in the history and adaptation of fresh ingredients adding a nod to his wife's Cajun background. The presence of Chef Scottie's beautiful and supportive wife elevated the event and added a layer of authenticity and grace that made us feel at home. The flavors were bold yet balanced, familiar yet surprising. I would have to go to the dictionary (remember those) because to simply say it was “delicious” would be a disservice.
This was a culinary journey, that left me both satisfied and inspired. I told the other guests that I would go home and play my version of "So You Think You Can Cook." The host location Churchills on Cherry, Macon, GA deserves its own standing ovation. Every detail was executed with care, from the lighting to the pacing of the evening. The entire experience was a testament to what happens when passion, skill, and hospitality converge.
I left with a full heart, and a renewed appreciation for the art of dining. If you ever have the chance to attend one of his events, don’t hesitate. You won’t just eat—you’ll remember.
To Your Health, Cynthia
