Why People Overlook Being Healthy

Heart disease is still the No. 1 global killer. So why do so many of us wait to care? For years, I have highlighted the importance of knowing the risk factors for heart disease, promoting healthier lifestyles, and ensuring people have access to screenings and medical guidance before these conditions become life-threatening. Our events are designed to do this with the help of our collaborative alliance of business and medical professionals.

In these nearly fifteen years, many volunteers have moved on, yet the vision lives on. We’re calling on new hearts, fresh hands, and passionate minds to help carry it forward. With consistent support and immense gratitude for our sponsors, donors, and volunteers, the organization has reached 78,800 individuals with a what could have been seen as a "mom & pop" operation is a powerful organization called - Chip'n Away @ Heart Disease. I remind the board members that, "We are more than a drop in the bucket. We are part of an ocean." Just as vast as the ocean is visually, so is the global impact of heart disease.

Life pulls in every direction—work, family, and all the daily detours. We don't get to choose "that moment" when it matters most.

Call to Action   ✔️ Volunteer your time. Help us reach more hearts.   ✔️ Donate to support screenings and events.   ✔️ Share this message with someone you care about.   ✔️ Tag a friend who needs a gentle nudge toward self-care.

That's why we need committed volunteers to help use raise awareness. Whether it's setting up a table, sharing a post, or simply being present, every effort helps us in the battle against the silence around heart disease. Our health quietly waits to be prioritized.

So, I did the research to find out reasons why people might overlook serious health issues, even when the facts are detailed clearly. This is what was found:

Reason

Explanation

Lack of Urgency

People don’t engage until they are personally affected. Health risks may seem distant until they become real.

Information Overload

Important health concerns get lost in a sea of news and messages, making it hard for people to prioritize them.

Denial & Avoidance

Some avoid thinking about health issues due to fear or reluctance to face reality.

Misconceptions

Many believe they are “healthy enough” or think conditions like heart disease only affect specific groups, leading to a lack of response.

Limited Awareness

Without prior exposure to educational outreach, people may not fully understand the risks or impact on their community.

Health isn’t just a personal choice; it’s a shared responsibility. Often when it comes to heart disease, waiting until 'someday' could be detrimental. The time to act is now.

To Your Health, Cynthia
