American Heart Month in February

During February, there are many efforts to educate people about the risk factors, prevention, and treatment of both heart disease and stroke. These efforts aim to help individuals recognize the signs of stroke and understand how they can reduce their risks.

Key Points:

  • Risk Factors: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and lack of physical activity.

  • Prevention: Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, and monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

  • Treatment: Medication, lifestyle changes, and medical procedures.

  • Signs of Stroke: Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination; sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Heart health is important every day. Know your numbers: Be aware of key health metrics that can help you manage or improve your overall health—especially as related to heart disease and other chronic conditions. Source: American Heart Association and the CDC

1. Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

HDL ("good cholesterol"): Aim for 60 mg/dL or higher

Total Cholesterol: Aim for less than 200 mg/dL

3. Blood Sugar Levels

Hemoglobin A1c: Below 5.7% (for non-diabetics) Tracking this is critical for managing or preventing diabetes.

4. Body Mass Index (BMI)

Healthy range: 18.5–24.9 While BMI has its limitations, it’s still a basic indicator of overall weight health.

5. Waist Circumference

Target: Less than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women Abdominal fat is a key risk factor for heart disease.

By knowing and tracking these numbers, you can work toward a healthier lifestyle.
