Amid growing concerns about chronic health conditions, during our recent health awareness campaign for American Heart Month, I emphasized the importance of proactive measures, regular medical check-ups, and community support in controlling health and wellness. As an advocate sharing my personal experiences and challenges, I dedicated time to offer practical solutions to promote healthier living.
The initiative brought together individuals with diverse interests and concerns. Among them were individuals passionate about nutrition but struggling to implement healthier habits. Others, facing recent diagnoses of chronic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, expressed fear about receiving adverse news during follow-up appointments.
We many stories being told to me, I felt it was important to help combat fear with knowledge. I remind participants that "Fear keeps us from walking in the physician's office to get options available to us, so we can walk out with a plan to improve." Regular check-ups are not something we should avoid. Understanding your health empowers you to take action and make meaningful changes."
The events also highlighted encouraging statistics:
Up to 80% of chronic conditions, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes, can be managed or even reversed with early intervention and lifestyle changes, according to health studies.
Approximately 70-80% of risk factors for heart disease and stroke—such as smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise—are modifiable with healthier choices.
Thankfully, some participants left the event inspired, with many committing to maintaining regular medical appointments and adopting practical steps to improve their health.
To Your Health, Cynthia
